Chiesta di Cristo Re, Gambassi

Built in 1940, it is the religious center of Gambassi Terme

Those who come from Castelfiorentino along the Volterrana Road and pilgrims arriving in the village on foot following the Via Francigena, meets it on the right. The size of the Chiesa di Cristo Re imposes itself at the gates of the village and turns its back on the magnificent panorama that opens up over the Elsa Valley.

Built in 1940, it is now the religious center of the town.

Inside, several 16th-17th century paintings are preserved on the walls. Among them, the San Sebastiano tra due santi of Baccio Gorini. In the 16th century, this semi-unknown Florentine painter made his fortune in Sardinia through a narrative vein of simple but sincere devotion.

On the counterfaçade, note two paintings from the ancient church of San Jacopo:

the Virgin and Child Enthroned between Saints John, Francis, Matthew and Jacopo, attributed to Pier Francesco Fiorentino, a painter trained with Benozzo Gozzoli and a collaborator of Ghirlandaio;

the Madonna between Saints John the Baptist and Jerome by Biagio di Antonio, a Florentine painter whose contribution between 1481 and 1482 to the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel is remembered.
