Chiesa di Santa Cristina

An early 20th century neo-Gothic chapel

Along the Volterrana road toward Castagno, a small neo-Gothic chapel stands on a small hillock crowned by a circle of large cypress trees.

It is a small brick building, rectangular in plan, twelve by six meters, with a sandstone portal surmounted by a blind arch.

It dates back to 1935, the same years as the founding of the Chiesa di Cristo Re in Gambassi. It was built by Counts Alessandro and Anna Nardi-Dei together with Count Scipione da Filicaia. The parish priest, the municipality and many families in the area also participated in the financial effort.

The popular rumor said that on this very land there were ghosts… In fact, the reason why this small knoll in Germagnana was chosen is that here, stood the ancient church of the same name of St. Christina, a building of which there are records from 1356.
